Unlocking Detroit Youth’s Potential: Harvard College Teams Up with the Durfee Innovation Society
On January 15th, Durfee Elementary-Middle and Central High School students (grades 7-12) gathered at the Durfee Innovation Society for a special presentation by Signe Smith, daughter of Life Remodeled President and COO Diallo Smith. Organized with the participation of Fearless Transformation and Metro Detroit Youth Club (MDYC), this event provided a unique opportunity for young minds to gain firsthand insight into the world of higher education.
Signe, a current sophomore at Harvard College, shared her experiences navigating academic life at one of the world’s most prestigious universities. She highlighted the opportunities available to students, broke down the admissions process, and offered valuable information about financial aid. The presentation, originally aimed at high school students, attracted younger attendees as well—several eager 7th graders joined in, demonstrating their early interest in college preparation.
Approximately 30 students participated, engaging enthusiastically with the discussion. Many were not only interested in Harvard but also expressed a newfound curiosity about higher education in general. The event sparked discussions about college readiness, life on campus, and even traveling to Boston. Students had numerous questions about what it’s like to live in the city, further broadening their perspective on college life beyond Michigan.
One of the most significant outcomes of the event was the inspiration it provided. Signe quickly became a role model for the students, graciously offering to mentor them moving forward. She emphasized the importance of being a well-rounded high school student, sharing tips on academic excellence, extracurricular involvement, and personal growth.

By the end of the presentation, students left feeling motivated and empowered, with a clearer vision of their future academic aspirations. Events like these continue to bridge the gap between local youth and higher education opportunities, opening doors to possibilities they may not have previously considered. Thanks to Signe’s generosity and willingness to guide them, these students now have a mentor and a newfound excitement about their potential journeys to college.
Harvard University is ranked #3 of 436 national universities by U.S. News. It is home to prestigious alumni such as President Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Theodore Roosevelt, and John F. Kennedy.
