“I get to fix a lot of broken stuff.”
Durfee Innovation Society (DIS) Maintenance Technician, Jake Williams, is no stranger to hard work. His unique talents have helped transform the DIS into the beautiful edifice it is today. On any given day, you can find Jake anywhere from the roof to the basement, working his magic to keep the DIS in tip-top shape.
Jake moved to Detroit from Anchorage, Alaska with his wife and 8 children seven years ago, and, if you ask him, that leap of faith has been worth the risk. Not only has Jake’s experience as a carpenter extraordinaire contributed to the DIS becoming an amazing attraction for community residents with its gymnasium, free laundromat, and free arcade (built by Jake himself!), but his home in the community is also a magnet for neighborhood children. “My wife and I have eight children, and it’s not uncommon for the kids in the neighborhood to outnumber my kids in my house.” His wife is a great cook and often teaches neighborhood kids how to make sweet treats.
